![]() ![]() This is the first in a new mystery series starring Riley Moon and Emerson Knight. ![]() A plan so sinister that only a megalomaniac could think it up, and only the unlikely duo of the irrepressibly charming Emerson Knight and the tenacious Riley Moon can stop it. Through the streets of Washington, D.C., and down into the underground vault of the Federal Reserve in New York City, an evil plan is exposed. What starts off as an inquiry about missing bank funds in the Knight account leads to inquiries about a missing man, missing gold, and a life-and-death race across the country. At least Riley Moon thought it was her dream job, until she is given her first assignment: babysitting Emerson Knight. Her aggressive Texas spitfire attitude has helped her land her dream job as a junior analyst with mega-bank Blane-Grunwald. Riley Moon has just graduated from Harvard Business and Harvard Law. Good thing he's also brilliant, rich, and (some people might say) handsome, or he'd probably be homeless. Janet Evanovich teams up with Phoef Sutton for a brand-new series of mysteries featuring Emerson Knight and Riley Moon, a dynamic duo with instant and undeniable chemistry.Įmerson Knight is introverted, eccentric, and has little to no sense of social etiquette. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Plot Against America brings the sum of Roth's books to more than two dozen. "It can't happen here?" a prominent American politician asks a large audience in New York City in October 1942. Now, with the United States at unceasing risk of terrorist attack and with many Americans fearful that civil liberties are being compromised as the government attempts to fight terrorism, Roth gives new currency to the old phrase - indeed, deliberately employs it as The Plot Against America approaches its climax. ![]() ![]() In 1935 Sinclair Lewis took the familiar phrase as the title for a novel that depicted the seeds of totalitarianism sprouting in a small New England town It Can't Happen Here is not among Lewis's best works, but it was widely read at a time when Americans were becoming apprehensive about the rise of Hitler and Mussolini, and when it was translated into German the Nazis banned it, implicitly acknowledging its power to sway people's minds. $26 Philip Roth's huge, inflammatory, painfully moving new novel draws upon a persistent theme in American life: "It can't happen here." That's how we express our longing to believe that our ideals are too strong to be shoved aside by some cruder impulse, and our nagging fear that our democracy is too fragile to withstand assault by the muscle of fascism. ![]() ![]() ![]() It was sooooo refreshing.Īnd somehow Lily Chu takes the old tired tropes (fake boyfriend, forced proximity, etc) and makes them readable and not just plot points. When she makes crazy decisions like, “why yes I’ll pretend to be this mega-famous Chinese actress when I don’t speak Mandarin or even write characters” it doesn’t come off as stupid– it comes off as taking a healthy chance and getting money to take care of her mother (who has Altzheimers and is in a special care home).Īnd even though she agrees to an unhealthy fake relationship with Fangli Wei’s mega-hot Sam Yao, every step of the way she creates boundaries, stands up for herself, and follow thru with both her decisions and recognizing her responsibility in mistakes. Pretty, pretty please with Henry Golding, Takeshi Kaneshiro or Ross Butler on top? I mean, look how good Crazy Rich Asians did! I find this leveling system to be particularly useful because (a) it does not consistently remind underperforming students of their shortcomings (imagine a 4th grade student saying, "I'm a level K reader!" vs. Instead, I use a combination of standardized reading assessments and the informal Fountas and Pinnell reading level assessments.
