![]() ![]() If all children (including those born deaf) can acquire language at about the same time, they must be born with a special capacity to do so. When the larynx moved lower, the pharynx became longer and acted as a resonator, resulting in increased range and clarity of sounds produced via the larynx.Ħ If these deaf children do not develop speech first, then their language ability would not seem to depend on those physical adaptations of the teeth, larynx, etc., that are involved in speaking. They are usually produced with sudden intakes of breath, which is the opposite of ordinary talk, produced on exhaled breath.Ĥ Human teeth are upright, not slanting outwards like those of apes, and they are roughly even in height.ĥ The pharynx is above the larynx (or the voice box or the vocal cords). 2 Primitive words could have been imitations of the natural sounds that early humans heard around them and all modern languages have words that are onomatopoeic (like bow-wow).ģ Interjections contain sounds that are not otherwise used in ordinary speech production. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The man must be a prodigy who can retain his manners and morals undepraved by such circumstances. ![]() The parent storms, the child looks on, catches the lineaments of wrath, puts on the same airs in the circle of smaller slaves, gives a loose to his worst of passions, and thus nursed, educated, and daily exercised in tyranny, cannot but be stamped by it with odious peculiarities. The author has a significant misunderstanding of how to use dialogue tags properly. There are some serious problems with even just the fundamentals. ![]() It is not just a question of style, in this case. Now, on to the bulk of the problems with this book: the writing. Suffice it to say, that was very irritating. ![]() ![]() The Institute ultimately holds up well as an original and enjoyable text. ![]() And King still really knows what to do when he gets his characters out on the road. This novel is less a motorcycle than a double-decker bus, but it does handle gracefully. ![]() The novel is set in the present day, but potatoes are 'spuds,' coffee is 'joe'.You may start to feel you’re in a ’50s-era cartoon strip. feels antiquated and a bit gamey in other ways. He can access a good deal of genuine chrome-wheeled magic as a writer, but he reaches too often for the canned and frozen stuff, for the dried spices, for word-clusters that fell off the back of a Sysco truck. The right words are all we have in this world, and King too rarely pauses to search for them. buries itself under a self-generating avalanche of clichés. The right writer can convince me to stick around. I don’t care about quests or magic or Vulcan mind-melding. I generally want to smack a (fictional) kid with special powers. That I didn’t is partly a matter of temperament. I read The Institute quickly and painlessly and I tried to enjoy myself.
